Who will the Kansas City Wizards add to the roster: part 1

At the press conference, Coach was asked about the Sealy trade. He wished Scott success and seemed to genuinely mean it. He talked about the relationships that are built and how it is hard in this business sometimes. He reiterated that yes it is a business and the team needs to do what is right for the team. The offer was too good to turn down. It sounds like they have pursued Scott for a long time (all this year).

Coach also gave the distinct impression that they were actively trying to use that allocation in a trade with another MLS team. When he was asked about players outside of MLS, he said of course they have along list of players they are looking at but I was left thinking they are looking inside MLS for this next player.

Three way trade with Toronto and Chicago maybe? I have some speculation on this but I want to do a little investigation before I comment publicly.

Wizards practice 07-16-2008 returns and new looks

With Scott Sealy gone, Josh Wolff in camp and ready to play (at least part of the game), the Wizards will definitely have at least a couple new looks this week. One of them is Michael Harrington, he is certainly going to be noticed on the field. He is currently in the lead for hair style at the moment.

Josh Wolff is the subect of a very fussy feature photo for the Star.

It was entertaining to watch, even Claudio thought so.

Yesterday I reported that Carlos Marinelli was not in camp. Today he was. He jogged and did basic fitness activities. When I asked why he was gone, the answer was "it was no big deal apparently".

The Thursday press conference was held today instead. Coach talking about his team and players.

Kurt Morsink was the player at press conference today. Here he is talking about his assist with Davy in the last game and the next games lineup.

Practice observations, news and rumors… 07-15-2008

No new faces at practice today. I was hoping I would be able to report on the new player we got with the allocation money from Sealy.

Speaking of allocation money, Ives is reporting that the Wizards received $125,000 in allocation money. I have also heard that the number was $150K, but that is not substantiated yet. Why would San Jose give that much money for a forward who has scored twice this year? Maybe they owe us a favor for sending them Nick in exchange for a draft pick, or they realize they are not going to use it this year and wanted to get something of value. The Wizards, while a little short of quality forwards, realize that they can get something for Scott this year. If they wait until the end of the year he will likely leave for foreign shores and they would receive no value in return. Yes he was going to leave at the end of the year, I am sure he feels he can be paid more somewhere, anywhere else. He is another example of how horribly some MLS players are compensated. Not blaming the Wizards in this case, it is just the league.

Wolff will likely play 45 minutes Thursday in Columbus. Coach feels he is ready to play that much. Will he start or come in at half? My guess is he will sub in but who knows.

Marinelli? Still not at practice and it is my understanding that he is not even in the country at this point. The official “off the record” statement was that he is at home taking care of some personal issues and getting treatment for his injury. Have we seen the last of him also?

I know last night I mentioned that Peter Vermes is always on the phone. So today I did not see him on the phone at all. He was out kicking the ball around at the end of practice and he seemed to be in a really good mood. May not mean anything but hopefully he was happy and relaxed because he just signed the next great player.

Even Coach looked relaxed and happy...

Calling all forwards... Peter Vermes is on line 1

With the trade of Scott Sealy to San Jose (see previous post), the Wizards have roster room, cap room, allocation money and a Senior International slot available. I think it is clear that Peter Vermes has some plan in play, but what. Is there someone already on the way? Is it one of the rumored Hungarians?

Numerous names have already been brought up on Big Soccer. Of course it is a lot of wild speculation, dream players and who we don't want posts that make that site so much fun.

While it is rumored that he is being shopped around, I will join in that fun and say I do not EVER want to see Ruiz in a Wizards uniform. There have been plenty of Wizards players that I have not been fond of, there have been a few that I REALLY did not like, but he would be the first one I would boo anytime his name was mentioned.

I think it is more likely that we are getting another player from outside the league. Any player acquisition from in MLS and we would probably have to trade another player for them. We have nobody, well almost nobody to trade at the moment. Of course I thought that before Scott Sealy was traded.

What do we need?
Attacking mid - Carlos can play fantastic attacking mid for an average of 30 minutes every 4 games. We could really use an atacking mid but he would need to someone to pass to...

Target forward - With the exception of Trujilio, we have no size up front. Unfortunately Ivan has not proven to be the target forward/scoring threat we had hoped.

Well Peter, the joke is that you are always on the phone. I would say that is not far from the truth. I am hoping you are talking to someone that can deliver a strong target forward.

Goodbye Scott

Scott Sealy was traded to San Jose today. Scott, you will be missed. He will join former Wizard Nick Garcia. Good luck Scott, I wish you luck.

Scott in practice.

The Wizards received an undisclosed amount of allocation money in return. While Scott was a good player and his prospects were looking up with Josh Wolff returning to the team, it was probably a very smart move by the Wizards. Scott has not consistently found the back of the net this year as the number one striker. Sealy has always seemed to thrive when he was in a better players shadow or coming from the bench but he did not seem to gel with Lopez when Claudio was playing up top either. Not that anyone on the team has stepped up.

This move allows the Wizards to make their next step and hopefully acquire more of a target player.
