San Jose Earthquakes practice 10 17 2008

First I want to thank San Jose for letting me interview them. Coach Yallop, Nick, Scott and Flor Rivera (the San Jose PR person), were all very helpful and willing to answer questions.

Coach Yallop talks about playoff chances, being an expansion team, and his former Wizards players.

I asked Scott Sealy about his new team compared to the Wizards. Some of the other talking in this clip is Flor letting me know that I need to wrap it up. They were waiting on Scott to get on the bus to leave. Scott talks about his future plans and the upcoming game.

Nick Garcia - I had to ask about the differences between the two teams as well. That is something that I am interested in. And yes I ask my standard what would like to be asked question. He manages to answer it and finds a way to give Jimmy a hard time as well. He talks about his future a bit also.

Side story - Nick's father was out watching practice. I talked to him for a few minutes. He is a really nice guy and an obviously proud happy father.

Practice observations… 10-15-2008

A Saturday game normally means a Wednesday scrimmage. One of the first things I always look for is who is on what team and then who is not playing/practicing.

Looked like the same lineup is likely, and considering the recent success that does make some sense. One thing that jumped out pretty quick was Claudio Lopez playing with the starter team up top. Looking around I saw Josh was watching from the sideline.

It sounds like he has a few dings and they are being extra cautious. Last game he was a gametime decision and played. I never found out what was wrong but he seemed to be moving okay. Josh, Lance (who was also not playing) and a coach were playing a juggling game and again seemed to have no problem. I would expect him to be a go.

Now, back to Claudio. He looked good up top. He made at least 2 goals (and they were both pretty sweet). Kinda like he did early in the year. His crosses did not look good and passing in general was okay, but his runs were great and shots even better.

I also got the distinct impression that the team is picking it up a notch. With playoffs possible and competition at almost every position, it seems that this scrimmage was played pretty hard. Harder than usual.
I may be reading too much into it, but that is what I saw.

Weekly interview #10 - Kerry Zavagnin

Kerry Zavagnin was the winner of the week 10 interview vote. He announced that this would be his last year back in August. He has not seen much playing time with the starters since then but has not complained. He has anchored the reserve team and continued to lead both by example and by words. At reserve games and scrimmages it is the norm to hear him directing his team.

Kerry talks about his teams chances for playoffs, his last regular season home game, people he has looked up to and he thanks the fans.

In the press conference, Coach Onalfo was asked about the possibility of getting Kerry into the game one last time. Coach expressed his desire to see Kerry get into the game one more time. It does sound like he plans to sub Kerry in if he can.

Please do all you can coach.

As a fan, I want to see Kerry on the field one more time. We need to cheer him off for all of his efforts. He has been a class act for this team.

Weekly interview #9 - Tyson Wahl

Tyson Wahl in practice...

Tyson was the vote winner last week and I missed him while I was talking to another player. So I stopped him this week to catch up. Got to make sure we get the people to interview that fans want to hear (or at least do my best).

Wahl started the season in the lineup, Hohlbein was in during the middle part of the season and Tyson has been a consistent starter for the last few weeks.

Tyson talks about playing against Blanco and Twellman, about competing for the starting job with Aaron.

Interview Poll #10

Who should we interview this week? Mike of Down The Byline and I are continuing the weekly interview poll.

Jimmy Conrad - he got the winning goal, okay the only goal just happend to be the winner. Always a great interview but has plenty of media attention.

Kevin Hartman - need a win in a must win game? Need a shutout? Call Kevin

Kerry Zavagnin - has not seen much first team action lately but still a fan favorite, last home game of his last season coming up.

Write in a candidate if you think someone else is deserving. If you have questions you want asked, keep it fairly respectful and write them in the comments. We are running out of season and opportunity to do interviews.

Go to the poll on the side of this blog and vote for who you want interviewed. You can also vote at Down The Byline and both votes count.
