Random shots 01/07/2008

Two Tigers invited to WPS combine: Senior Kat Tarr (pictured below) and former Tiger Jenifer Nobis (been playing in Sweden) were invited to the WPS combines. KU defender Holly Gault was also on the invitee list? Anyone know how the local women did?

Speaking of the ladies from Columbia, MU Tigers going to Brazil on a mission trip. They will be performing community outreach programs and also managing to get some soccer in with some pretty good competition. Sounds like these ladies will have some fun.

Ives has the Generation Adidas draft class. It sounds like UCLA midfielder Michael Stephens is still in negotiations with MLS. Since Baggio Husidic is already signed and Stephens is (maybe) close to signing, both of the creative midfield players that the Wizards have been linked to in mock drafts could end up Gen Adidas. That can only help the salary cap.

MNT:How did Santa do? Sounds like he did pretty good for Jewsbury. Not only did Jack get called into the National team camp, but we find out that he and his wife are expecting a baby girl this spring. Has there been a baby boom at Swope Park? Seems to me like there should be a pretty good youth team in a couple years.

Espinoza checks in from the Honduran National team camp…

Happy Birthday to Kevin Souter

MLS Draft and the Wizards

The 2009 MLS draft is coming up soon. Mock drafts are starting to appear. Ives is on his 3rd iteration now. Mock draft 3.0, Mock draft 2.0 and Mock draft 1.0. So far he has the Wizards taking a midfielder in each version. Either Michael Stephens from UCLA or Baggio Husidic from Illinois-Chicago. Both of them are supposed to be creative skilled attacking mid type player.

Is that what the Wizards need? Or should they take the best player available approach and build more through trades and signings? I will put up a poll later or you can leave your thoughts in the comments. I hope to get an interview with Peter Vermes at the draft if not before so we can hear what his thoughts are on the players available.

Lists of player ratings are being compiled at 3rd Degree (a great blog) and elsewhere. Of course it is hard to handicap players until the annual player combine. The combine will be held at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Jan. 9-13, 2009.

The draft will be in St. Louis and take place during the NSCAA convention on Thursday Jan 15. The WPS draft will be held all day on Friday.
