Peter Vermes interview 01-28-2009 Part 1

Peter Vermes is always willing to talk and answer questions (as long as you can catch him). He answered questions for over 20 minutes today. I am providing the audio but I am also including the highlights from each part as well.

Part 1 - possible signings

Looking at a couple guys, one will probably join the team in Florida to tryout, working on the other one.

Carlo Costly was looked at but not someone they were trying to sign.

Players they have interest in, one from Europe and one from South America.

No signings imminent. Wizards spent the last 2 years building/rebuilding. Trades, draft, acquisitions, they feel pretty good with the team. Other teams have big holes to fill, Wizards do not. Lots of young players have gotten playing time and are getting better.

Wizards can get stronger in a couple areas, could get more “cover” but not needing to sign in panic. More solid than start of last year.

Forward position better than start of last year.

Identified a couple guys, one specific they are working on but is a slow process.

Part 2 – the rookies, exhibitions

Besler and Demartin in camp, Zusi will join them in Florida. Priestly is trying a team overseas. Kitson has been released.

Peter wants to see them in Florida before commenting on anybody’s play so far.

They are arranging the preseason games in Mexico. The last preseason game may be in town or may be out of town.

Definitely want a friendly during the season. Working with SUM to get a team that wants to come travel to the US. Will be March before they start to know anything.

Part 3 – New coaches, other stuff…

Coach Zavagnin is reviewing foreign players, taking on some training responsibilities and tactical work with the midfielders. He has a very good soccer brain.

Coach Pascarella played with Coach Onalfo in LA, played club soccer with Peter.

The mall coming down is good indication of moving ahead and excited.

“Nothing in the fire for a jersey sponsor”.

Normally all I ever edit out is the greetings at the front of an interview and the thank yous at the end. I did edit out a little bit of this interview. One thing was deleted because Peter did not want it posted, the rest was to shorten it.

Wizards practice: 01-27-2009

Stopped by practice yesterday, of course it was cold, snowing and generally unpleasant. The team was broken into two groups. Each group took their turn doing weights and various exercises inside the training facility while the other group ran intervals under the watchful eye of Coach Zavagnin (Coach Z from now on). Coach Z would let them know when to sprint and when to jog. Nothing earth shattering, just cold.

Jewsbury is back from the National team camp for a couple days.

Jack took a few minutes to talk to me after practice…

Souter and Morsink seemed to set the pace for their group.

Demartin staying warm…

Besler picking up cones (rookie job).

My first interview with Matt…

Rest of the photos can be seen in this practice gallery.
