Wizards practice: 03-26-2009 (press conference)

When I arrived at practice today, the team was playing some of the normal small 3 team scrimmages. Here Kurt Morsink heads the ball to a team mate...

The team then did various set piece practices, corners, free kicks, both defending and attacking. Here most of the wall jumps....

Getting ready for a corner...
The combined winner of the fan voting here and on Down The Byline was Davy Arnaud. Coming in second was the Graham Zusi. I was able to briefly get both of them today. So here is the first weekly interview post for 2009.
I was able to talk to Davy before the press conference. He has sat out the last couple days because of something with his neck. I asked him about the goals from the last game, about having his daughter there for the first time, lessons learned from the last game and will he be able to play this weekend.

This is Davy at the press conference.

I talked to Graham Zusi about getting his first start, some of the challenges he faced and about getting into the next game

Jimmy Conrad - making a promo...

Most people that know anything about Jimmy Conrad knows that he can be a bit of a comedian at times (understatement warning). He can say and do some strange, odd things to get a laugh. He can also be serious when needed, just look at his intensity on the field. Wednesday after practice Jimmy needed to film some promo ads for the upcoming game on April 23rd. That is Jimmy Conrad bobble head night. Well Jimmy is a natural in front of a camera or microphone and can normally just run on and talk with ease, both entertaining and informing. I’m starting to sound like I am in Jimmy’s PR department but it is the truth.

So Jimmy starts reading the prepared script and makes a minor flub. Time to start over, and again, and again...

By now he is being harassed by Zavagnin, making it even tougher to get through the prepared script. (Talk to me little Jimmy...)

Herculez Gomez , who is waiting on Jimmy to finish so he can shoot his spot joins in to distract Conrad. He starts using the Metro Sports crew as a wall to shoot over and around. (No cameras or Metro Sports personnel were injured in the making of this blog)

Gomez then moves on to distract Conrad up close.

Metro Sports gets bored and start taking PK’s…

Eventually Jimmy says something so funny he can not believe it himself…

And Sean from MLSnet and Kyle (Hillcrestroad) totally lose it…

Jimmy regains his composure...

After throwing off everyone distracting him by making them laugh, Jimmy quickly regained his composure and finished it off like the media pro that he is. Next up was the Metro Sports interview with “Little Jimmy”…

Jimmy's listens to his little voice?

I think this is my new favorite shot of Jimmy...

Kansas City Wizards Practice 03-25-2009

It was fun out at practice today, the scrimmages are always fun but after practice was the most entertaining. I will put that up in another post later on…

Practice observations: There was another warm body in camp today that I did not recognize, probably a player to fill out the practice but I could not find out any info for sure. After warm-ups, the teams did a few drills and then scrimmaged. Wolff was sitting out with a hamstring tweak. Souter did a little bit in the warm-ups but then went and ran on his own for awhile. It sounds like he will be able to do game moves again next week so I would expect him to be in the full practices then. A little worrisome was that Davy left the scrimmage and sat on the sidelines for the rest of practice. It did not seem too serious since he stayed outside until the end, but I do not know what it was. With all the injuries, even Coach Kerry played in the scrimmage.

Too early to tell for sure what the lineup will be for Saturday, but my guess would be pretty much the same that we say last Saturday (barring injuries of course).

Kansas City Wizards Reserves 2 - 2 Creighton

I’m a little late putting this post up, just got the images processed last night. Please read Mike's game report. I just wanted to share some of the shots with everyone. The rest of the photos can be seen in the Creighton game gallery.

Santiago Hirsig chasing a Creighton player. Hirsig played the first half.

Not sure who it is but I liked the shot...

The Wizards 2nd goal to even up the game was Michael Kraus's second PK of the day. ..

Wizards/Toronto supporters - 03/21/09

One of the Toronto supporters...

I can honestly say I have never seen this before...

Kansas City Wizards 2 - 3 Toronto FC

Here are the highlights, there were not enough...

Davy's first goal...

Davy's second goal...

A very disapointing result. The team had looked so good in practice and seemed ready to come out and play. At least Davy Arnaud came through for us. Hirsig looked good in his limited time and it will be intersting to see when he gets his first start. I will have some photos up shortly.

2009 interview poll - Week 1

For the new season, Mike of Down The Byline and I are renewing the weekly interview poll.

Who should we interview this week?

Davy Arnaud - he was one of the bright spots in a dismal performance
Herculez Gomez – played up top
Graham Zusi – started first game as a rookie

Write in a candidate if you think someone else should be interviewed. Write suggested questions in the comments.

Go to the poll on the side of this blog and vote for who you want interviewed. You can also vote at Down The Byline and both votes count
