Kansas City Wizards 1 - 0 NY Red Bulls

Disappointing.

The Good:
It was a win, 3 points is always good...
A good crowd on a weeknight, the Wizards' staff did a great job to get people there...
B-2 flyover, Little Jimmy bobble head dolls, Season Ticket Holder scarves, karate demos, race car drivers, race cars, goofy mascots, sign contests and beautiful weather all added up to great off the field activities...
Herculez Gomez continues to get into dangerous positions that draws fouls and Red cards on the opponent...

The Bad:
Almost an entire game with a man advantage, at home, in front of the largest crowd we can have, on National TV and they can only score on a PK...
With a man advantage the Wizards can not generate many good chances...
Jewsbury gets a concussion...

How for a few photos:

B-2 flyover...

The Cauldron...

Johnson takes down Gomez in the box...

Earning a red card for himself and a PK for the Wizards...

Conway realizes he guessed the wrong way and watches Lopez's shot cross the line...

Jack Jewsbury looking a little groggy after his collision...

I have not finished all the photos yet but more can be seen here.

Kansas City Wizards Practice 04-22-2009

Lots of (mostly) fun stuff from practice...

Not sure who this keeper is, if anyone knows who he is, please leave a comment...

Cristman practicing karate?

While bored and waiting for the next fun function, Herculez starts balancing a ball (ala seal) on his head for extended period of time...

Cristman, also bored starts knocking the ball off of Gomez's head. But it then turns into a game of knock one off and balance the second. Not very succesful...

In honor of ESPN being in town, some old photos of John Harkes were taped up in goal and on the practice dummy as targets...

Herculez, Davy and Jack were recruited for target practice. Jack was the man, he hit not only the first...

But the second as well...

Davy, never willing to be defeated, took one down the middle on the Harkes dummy...
And celebrated!!!

Cristman (yes Cristman again) hides behind the dummy as Gomez tries to redeem himself on camera. In this case, who is crazier? Cristman for being the target with some protection or the Metro Sports camera man/producer (Cory) for being unprotected?

Harkes later stated that he had great fun and was happy to be here. He claimed he was not injured...

But he was later seen limping around with a crutch...

More shots from practice can be found here.
It did look like from observing practice that the Wizards would have the same players starting the game on Thursday but that they would be a little bit of a switch up in the lineup. Check out Mike's post on the upcoming game and his predicted lineup. It looks right to me...

Josh Wolff Interview - 04/22/09 part 1

Josh was in a good mood after practice. Two goals and player of the week seems to suits him well...

We were able to talk to him for quite awhile and this is some of what we talked about in part 1:

Can you talk about what sparked the change in the second half in Chicago?
Last 2 weeks, managed to take 4 points on the road while not playing well, is that a double edged sword? Good and bad?
Anything the coach or team leaders do to make sure the team does not come out flat in the next game?
The changes throughout the game make the difference?
You and Claudio are similar players, can you compare yourself with Claudio?
Would it be good to have Abe or Adam out there for size?
A little daunting to other teams to have players with speed and skill (Claudio, Josh, Davy) running at them?
Who was your best partner ever?

Josh Wolff Interview - 04/22/09 part 2

Part 2
Anything I should ask?
Are Davy and Jack as close as everyone says?
Josh talks about Davy and Jack...
Talks about Wizards fans...
Any good chants for the Red Bulls/Conway?

Ace and Gary or Davy and Jack? Either way they are matching...

Michael Harrington Interview - 04/22/09

Michael was the runner up in our fan voting this week. I managed to catch him after practice today.
We asked him:
After injury, starting to get back into lineup, how is that going?
Since it is not a fitness issue, it is just getting back to where coach wants you playing?
You’ve played both left and right mid, which one is better for you?
New York, what are you looking forward to with them?
Nice cross to Wolff in Chicago...
Can you talk about the in game adjustments?

Chance Myers - Wizards Designated Eye Candy?

Chance is the Wizards representative on the Cosmogirl hot soccer guys list. I do not read Cosmo girl, I saw that Duane at The 24th Minute found the hot soccer guy list. Should Jimmy be jealous now?

This is a photo I took for one of the Wizards interns last year. Chance was limping off from a Reserve game. She liked the photo...

Josh Wolff - MLS Player of the week

Josh Wolff has been named Player of the Week. He scored 2 goals in 11 minutes (78th and 89th) to tie up the game on the road. This is the sixth time Josh has received Player of the Week honors, the last was in 2006 prior to going overseas.
Josh Wolff, Player of the Week...

Little Jimmy says...

Little Jimmy would like to point something out. Over the last two games, the Wizards have played two teams that were at the top of their divisions, on the road, and walked away with 4 points. They have managed to hold off two hot and confident teams, stunned two home crowds and have not even played their best game yet. After several injuries at the beginning of the season the Wizards are getting healthy.

The Wizards are forever in Seattle's record books for being first in every good opponents category. First team to score on them, the first team to hold them scoreless in the first half, first to hold them scoreless for the game, first team to beat them, first team to beat them at their house. The first team to bring their fans down to a little reality also. Probably a few more that I forgot as well. I expect to see a sign at every Seattle game in Kansas City for a while that proclaims "We were the first!!!".

With the Fire, the Wizards have never played well in Chicago but that doesn't matter. The Wizards are starting to get points when they travel to the Windy city.

The Wizards are third in the East and are even tied for second in goals scored with eight (Chicago 10 and Chivas 8).

I know Jimmy is married but since Little Jimmy has been so informative, I have just the girl for him. She hangs out at CAB near the Cauldron and looks like she might be a lot of fun Little Jimmy. I think she has a sister as well...

Wizards 2 - 2 Fire

Jimmy Conrad and Kevin Hartman collide, Kevin scrambles back into position while Jimmy does his best to block McBride's shot. Unfortunately it angled past Hartman.

McBride shows why he is one of the best with his head when he receives the ball from Blanco and puts it past Hartman. Kevin had little chance on that ball. Up for goal of the week.

Hartman makes amazing diving save on Thorrington's shot to keep the Wizards from going deeper into the hole.

Lopez sends long cross in that Wolff one times into the net. Goal of the week candidate.

This time Harrington send the ball to Wolff who heads it in the goal from close range.

Hartman makes one more amazing save to preserve the tie and steal a point from Chicago.

Go vote for Josh for goal of the week!!

2009 interview poll - Week 5

Who should we interview this week?

Michael Harrington - helped spark the comeback, assist on second Wolff goal
Kevin Hartman - stood on his head to keep Chicago to only 2 goals
Josh Wolff - scores two goals to tie up the game

Vote over on the right and remember that you can also vote over at Down The Byline and all the votes count.
