Wizards Watch Parties

Saturday night, the Wizards take on Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium for the first time. There will be two watch parties for the game. The official watch party is at the Fox and Hound in Overland Park.

The other watch party is at Coach's at 103rd and Wornall. Coach's will contribute $1 to the "Pay Coach Onalfo's Fine" effort for every one of their famous hot dog combos ordered during the watch party.

I will probably be at Coach's.

Interview audio

I have been using imeem to host the audio for interviews I have done over the last year. At some point there was a change that I did not realize that made it so you could only hear 30 second previews of the audio on my blog. I am sorry for that. If you click "play the full song here" in the imeem audio box then you should be able to listen to the entire audio.

If anyone knows a better hosting solution, please let me know in some comments.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

Jimmy Conrad interview 05-14-2009 part 1

Jimmy is ALWAYS an interesting interview. I usually do not interview him because he has so many outlets already but I really wanted to get his take on a few things. I'm glad I did because he divulged the info about the MLS players getting a higher percentage of SuperLiga money than previous years.

I asked him who his All Star team would be. When he struggles we talk about SuperLiga (is in the post below as well). He goes back to the listing who his All star team would be and names the Wizards that should be named.

Reminder, click "play full song here" on the imeem link if it does not play the entire interview.

Jimmy Conrad interview 05-14-2009 part 2

Part 2 of Jimmy interview...

I ask Jimmy about his post playing career, TV, Radio. How much longer he thinks he will play. He talks about the possibility of coaching as well. Talks about Preki and his coaching. Jimmy discusses Coach Zavagnin and giving him a hard time.

Look for Jimmy on Fox Soccer Channel and his Beach Soccer color commentary.

At the very end of the interview he wishes Conrad a happy birthday. He is not talking to himself...

Coach Onalfo thanks fans

Coach Onalfo was fined $500 for comments made after the Toronto game. Coach had just been through an emotional few days. His car was broken into, his laptop with game plans and his passport were stolen. Later that day on the way to the game with his family, they all narrowly escaped serious injury or worse when a truck jackknifed in front of them. Though some miraculous and probably lucky driving, Coach and his family were shaken up but uninjured. The car was totaled but that is really not very important in the grand scheme of things.

Add in a couple of emotional games and Coach lost his temper and said some things that he later regretted saying to the referee. Coach apologized and admitted he was wrong but MLS fined him $500. The fine was justified and fair but just another minor blow after a few bad days.

Some fans took it upon themselves to raise the $500 to pay the fine for Coach
. There was a raffle/donation at the last watch party at Coaches Bar and Grill. There will be more attempts at future watch parties/tailgates until the money is raised. Heck I even chipped in a few bucks for the raffle. I did not win either the Chris Klein or the Wes Wade bobble head.

After the press conference Thursday I asked Coach if had heard about the effort. He immediately talked about how he wished I had asked about it during the press conference so he could let the fans know how touched he is. He was very obviously emotional about it. I asked him if he would go on the official record so I turned on my recorder and asked him again if he had heard about the fans effort. Here is what he said...

More SuperLiga info - Jimmy Conrad

Last year there were many complaints about the payout to the MLS players that were involved in SuperLiga. The MLS players did not get the same as theplayers on the Mexican teams. The MLS players complained and apparently MLS and the players have come to a mutually satisfying agreement. I interviewed Jimmy Conrad Thursday and while talking about SuperLiga he let us know that there is a bump in the percentage that for the MLS players. He did not know or was unwilling to say the exact amount but did say it was fair. I had not seen that info anywhere yet so I thought it was newsworthy.

I chopped out the Superliga portion of the audio if anyone wants to listen.

I will post the full audio from the interview shortly...

Kansas City Wizards Superliga Schedule

The Wizards Superliga schedule:

June 21 in St. Louis (SLU) - Atlas
June 24 in New England
June 28 at CAB - Santos Laguna

The dates are mandated by the league and are non-negotiable is what I was told. Community America is unavailable the weekend of the 21st, no other venue in Kansas City was available that would meet the tournament requirements so they will play is St Louis. No Football lines and no high schools because of sponsorship (beer ?). There may be other stadium requirements that I do not know about yet as well.

I really do not like that one of our 2 games against a non-MLS opponent is not at home but I am not sure what they could do differently.

Playing at SLU will be nice for new father Jack Jewsbury since that is where he went to school. At least he will have some homegrown fans.
