Random shots - 7/16/2009

It sounds like Grant Wahl will be on the Jimmy Conrad show (guest starring Sam and Dave) next week. If you do not know who Grant Wahl is, he wrote The Beckham Experiment: How the World's Most Famous Athlete Tried to Conquer America. It is the book that it seems everyone is talking about in MLS. Even if you do not care about Beckham, the book gives great insight into the inner workings of MLS.

Speaking of the Jimmy Conrad Show, I went to the last show to heckle Dave Borchardt and Sam Pierron (always good fun). Sam was cool enough to plug the blog (yes this blog) and Dave actually complimented the blog as well. I also got to meet Sharon, a really nice woman who stopped me to say good things about the blog as well. Very much appreciated Sharon, thank you.

Zoltán Hercegfalvi - last I heard they are still waiting on the work permit/visa. It sounds like they are hoping to use Zoltán on the back of his jersey. Good idea, Hercegfalvi might stretch the equipment guys a bit.

Boris Pardo Interview 07/16/2009

I talked with Boris Pardo after practice on Thursday.

Wizards practice 07/16/2009 part 2

Saw something unusual and hilarious at practice today. Coach Pascarella was working with Kronberg and Pardo on the near goal.

Kronberg taking a shot on Pardo...

While I do not have a shot of it, we all saw it happen. Metro Sports was interviewing Aaron Hohlbein after the scrimmage. One of the shots by a goalie missed to one side. The ball rolled with pretty good pace about 40 yards or so right towards Aaron and the interview.

The ball managed to nutmeg Aaron from behind without him knowing it was even there. The ball then hit Brad Porter's foot and bounced straight up into Aaron's ...., well you know. He had no idea it was there until it was THERE. Complete surprise, completely hilarious to everyone but Aaron. All the guys groan and then crack up laughing.

Hartman pointing out to Aaron where the ball was...

Aaron looking a little unhappy... (yes I cropped the photo on purpose)

Walk it off Aaron...

Kyle Rogers and Coach Pascarella was glad it was not them...

Kevin Hartman was still laughing about it in the press conference and said it was the "funniest thing he had ever seen in soccer". He was already laughing at him being nutmegged but that made it ten times better. No sympathy from Kevin...

Sorry to tell about this Aaron but I had to do it. Check out Metro Sports Wizards Weekly, they lead with it. You do not see the ball but you get to hear it hit and see Aaron's reaction.

Wizards practice 07/16/2009 part 1

The team did a full field scrimmage today. Starters versus the reserves, starters included Hartman, Besler, Hohlbein, McKenzie, Harrington, Lopez, Jewsbury, Gomez, Hirsig, Wolff and Thompson. The reserves were Pardo (Kronberg), Leathers, Marquess, Watson, "guest player", Myers, Zusi, Morsink, Kraus, Cristman and Zoltán.

Rauwshan and Zoltán fight for a header...

Rauwshan McKenzie shielding Adam Cristman off the ball...

Rauwshan had his hands full with Adam and Zoltán but handled it pretty well.

Lance Watson had a nice tackle to take the ball from Josh Wolff...

Zoltán is closely watched by Matt Besler...

Chance was everywhere. He has been playing harder than I have ever seen him lately...

McKenzie and Cristman again...

This time Rauwshan was able to muscle Adam off the ball...

Pretty good vein on the temple/forehead?

Zoltán a litte more relaxed...

Reserves - 2 (Cristman, Zoltán)
Starters - 1 (Thompson)

Observations:
Cristman - has a high work rate. He was running and running, had good touch and very physical. Good play on his goal.
Zoltán - he is a very good creative passer, not fast but seemed to have be where he need to be offensivly. Obviously still learning the team but has shown great potential
Myers - looks anxious to prove himself, he has been everywhere in practice and scrimmages
Most of the players look like they are working hard to compete for a spot in the 18.

Adam Cristman interview -- 07/15/2009

Talked with Adam Wednesday about his recovery, the difference between the Revolution and the Wizards practices and coaching.
