KC Wizards 2 - 2 DC United (other shots)

Before the last game, a few players and front office people came out to the tailgates to socialize and drop off some "refreshments". Adam Cristman is injuried so he was out there...

Kevin Souter, currently on the DL and doing a great job as a fill in broadcaster stopped by also. Here is posing with Mike of Down the Byline fame...

At press conferences and other events I often talk to Corey who produces the Wizards broadcasts. I asked of I could go into the "truck" during a broadcast to see what it was like. It was cool. They were talking to the broadcast team, feeding them facts and sending various cameras to get shots set up all while watching the game and preparing replays. Even though it would be too busy for a normal broadcast I would like to listen to that once in while. Kind of like the "directors comments" on a DVD, well a lot like it but with a lot more energy and humor.

I just happened to be in there when the PK was called for a (pretty light) bump in the Wizards box. This photo is the PK.

Kevin reacts to almost getting to it...

After the game, Claudio came over and tossed his jersey into the Cauldron...

This guy won the scrum for and came up with the game worn jersey...

Kevin Hartman also visited the Cauldron right after the game. He gave fans his gloves and shoes, posed for photos and signed a few autographs before security hustled him off. All the players were getting cleaned up and coming back out to sign autographs for fans but I was a little disappointed that more players did not come say thanks to the Cauldron. Class move by Claudio and Kevin.

Once the players came back out to some tables, fans had lined up way back into the stands to get autographs. Claudio and his son both signed this ball...

Conrad and Hohlbein...

Kamara looking stylish...

Hartman signing pink jerseys...

A couple fans had their foreheads signed by Claudio Lopez, not sure why the forehead but they were happy...

As each fan walked off, Wizards VP David Ficklin thanked them. Good move Mr Ficklin.

KC Wizards 2 - 2 DC United (Game shots)

Marquess and Besler chasing down Gomez who is sporting the huge bandage.

Kevin Hartman directing the defense...

Shot goes wide past the KC goal...

Wolff taking a shot while being tackled in the box...

Fred blocks the shot with his arm. This only feeds the Wizards fans calling them Handball United...

The ball just bounced off of Fred's arm and Roger already asking for the call...

I wonder what Clyde Simms is thinking. Fred watches the ref demonstrate the infraction which resulted in a red card...

Claudio Lopez took the PK which is on it's way past Cronin...

Fans celebrate...

DC United came into this game with a chance to qualify for the playoffs. They would be in with a win and would have a slim hope if they tied. It was sweet for the Wizards fans to help knock DC out of the playoffs.

A photographer from DC was at the game and got some great shots. Check them out here. I definetly need to upgrade my equipment to get better game shots at night.

Season end interview: Kevin Hartman

Kevin receiving the mounted jersey and gloves to commemorate setting the All Time Saves record early in the year.

As soon as Kevin spoke in the interview I could tell he was a speaking with emotion. It was obvious that the season being over and missing the playoffs pained him. He speaks candidly about the team and himself. He doesn't call any one player out but he does talk about what the team needs. There were not many actual questions asked in this time frame because Kevin answered at length, breadth and depth well beyond each question.

Part 1
Questions asked:
Thoughts on the season?
Is it an issue finding a mindset to grab a win?

Part 2
Questions asked:
How do you improve that decision making and communication?
Can that mindset change within the same group of players or does it require a change?
How did you come through playing every minute and are you prepared to do it again?
You spend a lot of extra time after practice, do more of your team mates need to do that?

Season end interview: Peter Vermes

We talked with Interim Head Coach/Technical Director Peter Vermes at the season ending interview session. I cut it down as much as I could while still leaving all the pertinent information in the two segments. The questions that were asked in each segment are provided so you know which one you may want to listen to if you are short on time. I would suggest listening to both because it is good insight to what and how Peter thinks.

Part 1
Questions asked:
Did you see the improvement you were seeking when you took over?
Did you provide the players you needed as coach?
Did u bring in any players you would not have accepted if you were the coach?
Has this coaching experience made you a better Tech Director?

Part 2
Questions asked:
Do you feel it will be easier to evaluate players now that you have been coach?
Making a mistake on players hurts more than it would on a bigger club?
How far along is his(Zoltan) progress
The search for players continues, you have players in camp even today?
Who did you have in camp today?
If someone impresses you, does the process begin or do you bring them back in January?
Who do you like in the playoffs?

Season end interview: Matt Besler

Talked to Matt at the season end interview session. He talked about being a rookie, learning from the veterans and what Jimmy gets away with among other things.

Part 1

Part 2

Season end interview: Josh Wolff

The Wizards held their season end media session Tuesday. There was way too much info to transcribe and too much for my poor video camera to hold so I am posting the audio of the interviews for everyone to hear. Each interview was long enough that I broke them into two files.

First up is Josh Wolff, he set a career high for goals and possibly nose bleeds.

Vote for Hartman for save of the week

Vote for Kevin for Save of the Week. His jumping across the goal and knocking a shot over the top was incredible.

Here is Kevin giving directions to his defense...
