Kansas City Wizards 2 - 0 Philadelphia Union

This post is a little late but I have been a bit distracted by the World Cup. Sorry about that...

The Wizards came out strong initially with Kei Kamara putting a screamer past Chris Seitz in the 9th minute to give the Wizards their first lead in weeks. After that goal Kansas City seemed to sit back and let the Union come at them and then counter attack. That strategy paid off in the 35th minute when Zusi received a pass from Smith and slotted one past Seitz for Zusi's first MLS goal.

The Union kept up their reputation for "physical" play when Michael Orozco received his second yellow and the resulting red in the the 42nd. Despite having the man advantage the Wizards allowed Philadelphia to push most of the second half. Kansas City continued to sit back and counter with some brief periods of domination that generated a few more chances but no more goals.

Overall it was a solid win that Coach Vermes will try to use to build confidence for after the the World Cup break.

Man of the match: Kei Kamara - scored the game winning goal and was the only Wizards that kept wanting to go attack all game

Runner-ups:

Ryan Smith - two assists, looked dangerous while he was in the game

Graham Zusi - his hard work has paid off scoring his first MLS goal and becoming a top option for when starters are not playing. Zusi may be the midfield future of this team

Jimmy Nielsen - save after save he keeps the Wizards in the game

Now some photos, more can be found here.

The Kansas City Wizards Juniors U-16's qualify for Academy playoffs

The Kansas City Wizards Juniors U-16's have qualified for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy playoffs. This is a tournament in the same format as the World Cup. There are 32 qualified teams (out of 75) in 8 groups. June 25-29 in Browns Summit, North Carolina each team will play the other teams in their group. The 8 group winners will advance to the finals July 9-17 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
The Wizards Juniors finished 8-2-8 in their first year to qualify and went 1-1-1 in the recent Showcase Tournament to grab the last spot in to the Academy Playoffs.

"I really felt like we deserved to be there, there is 4 teams out of our conference that qualified" Coach Jon Parry explained. Coach Parry is the Head Coach of the U-16 team and also the Director of the entire Junior program for the Kansas City Wizards.

Despite being the last team to qualify, Coach Parry describes his confidence in the team, "There is not one team out there that I don't think we can play with. We played the best team in the country at the showcase, it was the Baltimore Bays and I think we will end up playing them again. They beat us three to one but we were up one to zero and we can play with them, we're excited. You just have to get to the dance and we are there."

Johnny's Tavern was the official watch party site of the American Outlaws. It was a madhouse in there and I did not get many photos from the inside. Here is a short video from Johnny's.
