Mike Flaherty interview - 6/25/2010

Mike Flaherty is the Wizards equipment manager but he also has a long history with US Soccer as well. He was the team administrator when Nike Project 40 started (now Generation Adidas). Project 2010 was part of this effort and was supposed to be the blueprint for winning the 2010 World Cup. Hopefully it works.

I talked with Mike about his experience with Project 40.

Matthew Schofield of the Kansas City Star has a good article on the Project 2010 blueprint.

Eidur Gudjohnsen is the DP that the Wizards have targeted

So now it can be revealed that Eidur Gudjohnsen is the DP that the Wizards are targeting. Robb Heineman confirmed on Big Soccer that Eidur Gudjohnsen has been made a formal offer. The Wizards are competing against Tottenham Hotspur for his services.

Eidur Gudjohnsen has played at Chelsea and Barcelona and was loaned to Tottenham.

Wizards DP negotiations confirmed

I spoke with additional sources today that confirmed the Kansas City Wizards are in negotitations with a DP. The main source today would not say they are close but did confirm they are having serious talks with a player that would be a DP.

It was also confirmed that they are looking at a non-DP level defender.

Wizards closing in on a DP

It is my understanding that the Wizards either have come to terms or are close to finalizing terms with a player that will become the team's second DP in history. He is an attacking player with experience at a couple of the largest clubs.

Claudio Lopez was the first DP in Wizards history. Lopez signed with the Wizards in 2008 and renegotiated his contract down to just below DP salary in 2009. The Wizards and Lopez failed to come to terms for the 2010 season and he is now with Colorado.

The Wizards are also close to signing another player that is not in the DP range.
