Pablo Esobar released?

The Star is reporting Pablo Escobar was released by the Kansas City Wizards. This was to make roster room for the recently acquired Shavar Thomas. Not a huge surprise. When I asked today why Escobar was not on the practice field I was told to to not expect him to be there anymore but nothing was being made official yet.

Also not a surprise considering Shavar Thomas was wearing Pablo's (now former) number at practice today.

It is still not being confirmed yet by the Wizards.

UPDATE: now confirmed

Craig Rocastle interview - 6/30/2010

Talked with Craig Rocastle after practice. He started the last match against New York and had probably his best game so far as a Wizard. He was subbed out in the 66th for Graham Zusi when the Wizards were needing to chase a goal.

Peter Vermes interview - 6/30/2010

Talked with Wizards Manager Peter Vermes after practice today. We discuss the Shavar Thomas trade and the game with New York. Vermes mentions adding another player in the short term as well.

Shavar Thomas traded back to the Wizards

The Wizards reacquired central defender Shavar Thomas. In exchange for the Jamaican defender, the Wizards sent Philadelphia two second round MLS SuperDraft selections, one in 2011 and one in 2012, as well as allocation money. Thomas has played 151 games for five MLS teams over eight seasons, scoring three goals with one assist. Thomas, 29, played for the Wizards from 2004-2006. He will arrive in Kansas City Wednesday night and will be available for training Thursday.

“We really like Shavar’s MLS experience and the strength he brings to our back line,” Wizards Manager Peter Vermes said. “We are always looking to improve our roster, and he adds quality depth to the center of our defense.”

"It's something we've been trying to do for a little while now, it finally just came together. We needed another guy in the back and most would say that is true. It's something we've been looking after for awhile, finally the deal came through so it's good to be able to add him in" Vermes added this morning after practice.

Discussing the need to clear a roster spot Coach Vermes replied, "We have a little flexibility for the short term here so right now we're okay with the way we are.

When asked about the terms of the deal Vermes replied, "Something like that. We get some other things with Shavar so it's not just Shavar. We get a couple other things in return so the value actually worked out a lot better for us than meets the eye. "

Sources have told me that the additional items in the trade are that Philadelphia picks up a significant portion of Thomas' salary and they also gave KC some cap room as well. That balances out the trade a bit more.
