Sporting KC player news recap (Garcia, Murray and a Brazilian)

Nick Garcia when he was training with Sporting KC
Earlier in the week on Callum Williams radio show on 610 I mentioned that Nick Garcia was no longer with the team. Manager Peter Vermes had confirmed that he was not with the team and had said there was "no mechanism for bringing him onto the team". I understood that to mean that with Garcia's veteran status and the required salary and contract from that status that they could not add him at this point. I think Nick is not quite ready to hang his boots up yet and will turn up somewhere.

On the podcast that we recorded earlier in the week I mentioned that JT Murray was back training with the team. He was Sporting KC's second round pick that normally plays at left back from the University of Lousiville. He was the release in spring that surprised the most people since he was drafted so high. He went to trial at Colorado after he left Kansas City but did not last long there either. Manager Peter Vermes said that he looked better upon his return, that "he showed a lot of presence that he did not have before".

Sporting KC and I imagine many MLS teams frequently have players training or trialing with the team. The definition of training and trialing seems to vary depending in on the day and the player being asked about at the time. Normally training does not mean the player is serious about catching on with the team but is providing an extra training body for the team and getting experience and in shape for the player. Trialing almost always means that a player is there to get a contract, be it now or in the future. There were several players training/trialing with Sporting this week.

One player of some note that has been in camp for a few days was a Brazilian midfielder. It seems that the team did like him but Manager Peter Vermes did not think it would work out with him so I would not expect to see him around much longer. I was never able to get his whole name but I will see if I can find out. What little I saw of him he looked good but I really only saw him for a short time in a small sided game with other players training or trialing with the team.

Duani, Mishaelof and Johnson on trial with Wizards

Israeli players Rami Duani (taller on left) and Moshe Mishaelof on trial with the Wizards.

Duani is a central defender/defensive mid who played for Hapoel Tel Aviv and the Israeli youth national teams.

Mishaelof is a defensive midfielder that mostly played for Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Jemal Johnson, American born player who is lived in England since he was five is also on trial with Kansas City. Johnson was in the Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers youth system. Most recently he was with MK Dons and was on loan to Stockport County.

There are a few other players in camp right now as well but I do not have their names yet.

More players in camp - Rocastle and Chhetri

Kansas City have two more players in camp on trial.

Craig Rocastle - Rocastle is a midfielder who is best known for being the cousin of Arsenal and England player David Rocastle. Craig was in the Queens Park Rangers youth system and then was with Chelsea reserves. While he did not play a league game with Chelsea he gained experience through several loans. He did play with Sheffield Wednesday and Port Vale as well before bouncing through a few teams on trial.

Sunil Chhetri - Chhetri is striker that plays for Dempo SC of the I-League. He had reportedly signed a contract with Queens Park Rangers but was denied a work visa. Chhetri has also played 35 games for India. Chhetri had been rumored with previous MLS clubs but was unable to come to terms with MLS.

Kansas City Wizards 5 - 0 Arizona Sahuaros

Update: The team will be putting a post up later today but I was told that some of the information that I provided was incorrect.

The last goal was scored by Casian, not Pizzaro. Escobar is not there yet so he was not the one that got a red card. The unknown defender was not McKenzie, he has been waived.

Kansas City defeated the Arizona Sahuaros in the Wizards first preseason game. Kansas City played 3 full teams for 30 minutes each. The first team scored 4 goals and the third team added one as well.

Thanks to Dennis St. Lawrence for providing these details.

The goals were as follows:
6:00 – Wolff - Wizards played a short corner from Espinoza to Arnaud and
back to Espinoza who crossed it into Wolff who headed it in.
9:00 – Wolff – Zoltan sent a nice ball in the middle which Wolff one-timed
in.
10:00 – Zoltan – Fuzetti had a nice assist
16:00 – Fuzetti scored pounding a ball in from the back side.
77:00 – Pizzaro – diving header from the left side

Here were the line-ups for each thirty minutes:
GK – Crayton
Leathers, Conrad, Holbein, Harrington
Arnaud, trialist X, Fuzetti, Espinoza
Wolff, Zoltan

Zoltan looked really good, and Wolff was finishing. There were
several bad passes (poor decisions) by veterans, that would have cost
us if playing a higher level team.

30-60 Minutes:
GK – Alex Horwrath
??? (possibly McKenzie), Cardenas, Besler, Aiyegbusi
Casian, Auvray, Hirsig, Smith
Bunbury, Kamara

The second group just did not seem to all be on the same page and both
Kei and Teal appeared to be frustrated – really not many opportunities
to show themselves. Cardenas played well on defense with that group as
did Besler. Smith made some good runs and Casian showed potential.

60-90 Minutes:
GK – Boris Pardo
Kostrov, Sarkodie, Gehring, Escobar?
Zusi, Myer, Souter, Pizarro
Kraus, Brown
I think it was Zusi created the play that Pizarro scored on. Escobar
was red-carded for a rough tackle in the 80th minute. This group did
created scoring chances.

Morsink was nursing some injury so did not play.

It was in the 60’s and rained some during the middle and end of the game.
It was evident that it was early in the season and that they have not
played together much.

Player update - 2/4/2010

It is my understanding that another keeper may be joining the Wizards soon if he is not there already. I do not know a name but was told that he is a "big time" keeper and that he played in Europe. This is not Walker, he is in camp and training.

With the current keepers in camp and the potential of another joining them soon, it seems we may have seen the last of Kevin Hartman.

Ryan Smith joins Wizards in Arizona

Robb Heineman tweeted that Ryan Smith has joined the team in Arizona. While this is an attacking left sided player, it seems that it is not the same one that Robb mentioned during the draft.
Smith has one appearance with the England U-20 team. He started his professional career at 16 with Arsenal with a few games in the Carling Cup. He has spent time with Leicester City, Derby County, Millwall, Southhampton and Crystal Palace. All that and he is still 23.

It seems that he showed a lot of talent and promise as a youth player but has slid down the depth chart at each team he joined. It will be interesting to see how he fares in Wizards training camp and if he can earn a spot.

KC Wizards invitees tryout - some interesting names

Not commonly known but the Wizards are holding two tryouts this year. An open tryout in March like they have done the last two years and an invitational tryout. There are some names that are familiar to Wizards fans like Nelson Pizarro and Doug Demartin. Pizzaro signed with the Wizards two seasons ago after he impressed in the open tryouts. Nelson was allowed to leave the team last year so he could find more playing time. DeMartin was one of the Wizards second round picks last year but left training camp with an injury. He trained with the team again during the season but the club did not opt to sign him. Good to see both them back trying again.

Nelson Pizzaro at the tryout...

Another name that is fairly recognized is Vincenzo Bernardo. He is a player that has been highly touted, spent time with the U-17 and U-20 National teams and was in Italy from 2006 to 2009. All that and he is still just 19.

Vincenzo...

The biggest name that I have found out so far is Ian Walker. I believe he is the same Ian Walker that played in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City. He was capped with the English National team as well.

Walker is the keeper with the ball...

Coach Zambrano...

Not sure of his name, just liked the shot. He made the save...

It looked like there was over 30 players. Seems like they are serious about looking for talent.

Trialist from the Ivory Coast

There is a trialist in camp this week from the Ivory Coast. It has been reported on the Big Soccer forum that his name is Zahui Thierry. I heard them call him something like that so it sounds right. I will double check tomorrow.

Here is the trialist getting a drink...

Since he was described as diminutive, this shot give a little perspective on size...

He appeared to have some good ball skills. A lot of trialists have not gotten into scrimmages before but since Vermes is coach now I do not know if that means anything. He was put into the scrimmage in the second half, played in the middle and had a couple very nice passes. One of those sprung Josh in alone on Hartman. Kevin had to come out and back a very good save.
